North America may have the disheartening figure of schlubster Perez Hilton to remind us of just how far the trade of rumour-mongering and gossip-slinging has fallen from the already trashy days of Squeeqee and Walter Winchell, or even Fellini’s “Dolce Vita,” (which gave us the noun paparazzi, from the Italian word for mosquito: “paparazzo”) but Brazil has its own lumpy figure, and he’s rightly more colourful and obnoxious, although erroneously considered the Jay Leno of Brazil.
Taking his moniker from the Portuguese word for cross-eyed, Vesgo (aka Rodrigo Scarpa) is the “cross-eyed reporter” of Brazil’s “Panico na TV!” (Panic On TV), a nice selection of post-millennial TV flotsam that sees the gummy reporter chasing after celebs with a Santa Claus-like bag of gifts, haranguing them and declaring his love.

Vesgo made his North American debut on the sidewalks o’ LA along with long time partner Silvio Santos earlier last week, attempting to present a pair of “Sandals of Humility” to the portly popper Britney Spears who was hitting Starbucks for an early morning shot of caffeine after visiting her two children. The pink-wigged and beige-suited reporter (showing a knack for Brazilian colour coordination), screamed “Britney, I from Brazil, we love you,” and chased down the star’s departing SUV, shortly thereafter almost being flattened when Spears returned to her home.
Conflicting reports on the contents of the bag – were they “Sandals of Humility” or a matching pink wig and pair of panties?
