Anti Cancer - A New Way of Life
By: John Dillon on Tue Jan 13, 2009
Anti Cancer - A New Way of Life written by David Servan-Schreiber MD, PhD, is a recent International Bestseller and for good reason. The book is a tremendous read, I rate it highly and recommend it to anyone that is seeking to improve their overall health and wellness. Although the book is titled ‘Anti Cancer’ the enhancements in health and lifestyle to be had from adopting almost any of the recommendations in the book will benefit not just cancer sufferers but healthy people alike.

The book is meticulously researched - as befits the PhD author - and every single data point or conclusion references various studies, meta studies and the proof required by Western medical science. There are no assumptions, suppositions or other ’soft’ claims based on faith and supperstition. At the same time even with all the data David Servan-Schreiber still manages to present it in a highly readable manner that flows smoothly and is easy to follow.

For this reviewer what sets this book apart from other books on health or nutrition it’s that David Servan-Schreiber establishes a direct link between the changing environmental and lifestyle factors in the West including the western diet (primarily comprised of high fat, meats, processed foods and sugar) which leads to inflammation and promotes what he refers to as the terrain where cancer can take root and grow. Add to this the ever increasing levels of stress in our society and you have the makings of a cancer epidemic. By clearly establishing the links between the causative factors and how cancers develop Servan-Schreiber sets the stage for the rest of the book where he provides clear and specific guidelines on what an individual can do to reduce their probability of getting cancer or what someone with cancer can do to attempt to heal themselves.

Anti Cancer - A New Way of Life, is also superior because of the personal connection between the writer and his subject, we cannot finish this review without mentioning that Servan-Schreiber suffered from brain cancer on two occassions, which lead him on a personal quest to save himself and in doing so he discovered what he refers to as ”A New Way of Life”. This ‘New Way of Life’ involves a holistic approach to living each day that encompasses nutrition, exercise and the mind. Throughout the book he is sensitive and insightful in discussing the feelings of being diagnosed with cancer and his experiences with various cancer patients - some still alive others not - and their interactions with him and each other. It does seem that the fear of death, or the possibility of death makes someone focus on the ‘important things’ and this book provides further evidence of that.
